Who is pacified? Revisiting the interpretation of two poems by Andrey Belyi

The article discusses two interrelated poems by A. Belyi written in 1903 “Pacified” and “Last tryst” and the answer to the question: “What hidden meanings can be identified in these texts?” The key to understanding of the selected texts is a poem by M. Lermontov “Demon” and paintings by M. Vrubel, brought new life into the romantic imagery of the poem. The answer to these question provide a deeper understanding of the features of A. Belyi’s early poetics, his view of the world, an understanding of basic ideals of romanticism and crucial philosophical issues of his time, as well as the interrelatedness of different branches of art in Russian culture of the Silver age.
