The publication culture and the “print on demand” technology

The article describes the features of books issued by the technology of “print on demand", which is a progressive marketing mode in the publishing industry. The author considers both positive aspects of the technology: reducing the time and cost of publication, exploitation of press sheets, waste-free production, etc., and negative ones: in particular, the paper presents a detailed analysis of the shortcomings of the artistic and technical design of books, arising due to the non-compliance with the requirements during the prepress preparation of the publications, which affects the communicative culture of the book.
