The Kurdish question: origins and perspectives

The article outlines the historical background and prospects for resolving the Kurdish issue. The main determinants that determine the degree of readiness of the Kurds to create a national Kurdish state are highlighted. As such, the uncertainty of the boundaries of ethnographic Kurdistan, the separation and high degree of differentiation of the Kurdish ethnos along ethnic, religious, status grounds, the absence of an ethno-national core among the Kurds, and the presence of different attitudes towards the need to build a national state are highlighted. Possible prospects for the formation of Kurdistan as an independent state, its potential strategic advantages and disadvantages are outlined. The author concludes that at the moment there are no conditions for this. The state subjectivity of independent Kurdistan will be complicated by the presence of a number of geostrategic and geo-economic features, as well as the policies of regional and other actors in international relations.
