The paper provides a brief overview of the life and work of the prominent Russian ethnographer Lev Pavlovich Lashuk during his studies at Moscow State University and work at the Komi Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. One of the important topics that L. P. Lashuk raised while working in Syktyvkar was the problem of defining criteria for distinguishing various “historical and ethnographic groups.” The appendix contains a previously unpublished text by L. P. Lashuk “Ethnographic (economic and cultural) regions of the Komi territory.” The paper also provides information about the work of his first wife, ethnographer O. N. Vozdvizhenskaya, in the Komi Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and about the protest action that his son N. L. Lashuk intended to carry out in Syktyvkar.
