Lexical crossability of denotative spheres "sport" and "movement": problems of complex semantics

Бесплатный доступ

The article deals with the lexical crossability of two denotative spheres, those of "Movement" and "Sport". Semantic relations appearing in reality determine the proximity of these spheres and are the reason for the appearance of a large number of words with complex semantics in the semantic field “Sport”. Such words can be included in ideographic dictionaries (or thesauri) to more than one lexical class, which results in both an applied lexicographic problem and a number of unsolved theoretical issues. It is noted that in different dictionaries and corpora the problem of complex semantics is solved in different ways. The research data for the article comprises about 300 notional words that make up 7 denotative groups: "Kinds of sport and sports games", "Movements and types of movement in sports", "Sports competitions and their stages", "Sports exercises", " Sports facilities or their part, the venue of sports events", "Sports equipment, sports gear", "Person involved in sports, related to sports». The lexical semantics of the vocabulary in each group is commented; the issues of the part-of-speech asymmetry of the vocabulary from the sphere "Sport" are considered. The status of the semes was identified, within the framework of complex semantics. The meanings of combined and included types are revealed. The issue of categorical feature extraction for domains of the type "Person" is solved. In this case, the categorical-lexical seme “person” becomes a superclassifier, and the group proper is formed with a compound denotative feature 'a person related to sport'. The proposed solution can supposedly be used to analyze the vocabulary of other domains.
