Formation of new lexical units in German political media discourse

In addition to informative and correlative functions the main characteristics of media discourse include those known as suggestive and manipulative. The latter pair if addressed in terms of linguistic and extra linguistic interplay presents no small interest. The creative (or productive) nature of media discourse is most clearly displayed at the lexical level inasmuch as it generates new lexical units, particularly deonyms. Such new formations come about to serve as a means of linguistic economy, expression, and the defamation or invalidation of an idea or notion. The aforesaid assertions are amply substantiated by vivid examples from German.
