Literary and aesthetic position of the newspaper "Golos" in the culturological context of the era (case study of the assessment of L. N. Tolstoy’s novels)

The article deals with the reception and interpretation of L.N. Tolstoy’s novels by the Petersburg liberal newspaper "Golos" (1863-1883). The literary and aesthetic position of the newspaper was determined, on the one hand, by the editorial views on the purposes and problems of literature in the contemporary cultural context, and on the other hand, by the particular, very dynamic political situation in Russia affecting the assessment of works and the personality of the writer. The critics and publicists of the newspaper focused on not only the artistic merits of Tolstoy’s works, universal and general cultural values considered in his novels, but also philosophical reflections of the writer.
