The proposed scientific article reveals the theoretical and practical aspects of the functioning of small and medium-sized businesses in the modern market economy. The content and importance of medium and small businesses for the economy are described, statistical data on SMEs in the Russian Federation are analyzed. Based on the results of the study, relevant conclusions are formulated about the problems and prospects for the development of domestic small-scale economic activity.
