Material welfare as a factor of influence on the population health in Russian regions

The recent negative economic trends influenced on the growth of poverty, the decline in real incomes, the slowdown in the rates of mortality decline, the increase in morbidity and mortality from different groups of causes. The above-mentioned trends are particularly acute in many Ural and Siberian regions of Russia. The article analyzes the factors of material welfare, influencing on the population health of Ural and Siberian Federal districts. Based on a correlation and regression analysis, the author identifies the following risk factors for mortality of infants and working age population: unemployment, income below the regional subsistence level, poor housing conditions, and rural residency. The impact of these factors is different for infants and able-bodied men and women. These features should be considered when developing social policy to limit the influence of poverty and unemployment on the population health.
