The Great Patriotic war (1941-1945) is one of the most important periods in Russian history of the 20th century. It was a factor that predetermined many features of the next development and the modern cultural specifics of the Urals. The development of science in the Urals in 1941-1945 as a part of cultural and industrial development of the region is a very urgent subject. One of the most important aspects of the subject is material security of scientists. The author discusses in the article state arrangements directed to improve the well-being of scientists and variants of additional sources of material security in different cities. The arrangements realized by the government (the increase of levels of supply, the increase in wages, and the allotment of additional goods) made few changes in supplying with foodstuff and manufactured goods. In conditions of irregular and incomplete centralized supplies it was necessary to use local resources. Taking into account this, the government placed the emphasis on the development of economic infrastructure (vegetable gardens, canteens, etc.) of scientific organizations. The result of this comprehensive approach was considerable stabilization of material security of scientists already by 1944.
