Based on a wide range of archival materials, introduced into scientific circulation for the first time, the article analyzes the issue of material support of parish school teachers in the Kola North from 1890 to the 1910s. The relevance of the study is determined by the need to study the influence of the material factor on the socio-professional status of teachers. It is shown that the material conditions in northern parishes were difficult, especially in the Sami parishes (pogosts). References to harsh living conditions in the North can be traced both in the documents of Kemsko-Aleksandrovsky District School Department and the personal petitions of teachers of that time. The amount of teachers’ salaries during the studied period was steadily increasing, but even the educational authorities themselves recognized it as “meager and insufficient”. Harsh climate, high cost of living, lack of teachers’ own housing and household led to frequent rotation of school teachers. It is concluded that that the life of parish school teachers was closely connected with the life of the entire local community of the Kola North.
