Medical and economical effectiveness of restrictive strategy for blood transfusion

Implementation of patient blood management in the Pirogov center began in mid-2006. In 2013 compared with 2004, the average length of hospital stay was reduced by 36.4% and the mortality rate - 61.6%. The part of red blood cells recipients among hospitalized patients since 2007 did not decrease less than 4%. The part of plasma recipients during this period decreased by 74%. The number of red blood cells transfusions per 1000 operations declined in 2003-2013 at 39.3%, and the plasma - 97.2%. The ratio of doses transfused red blood cells and plasma in 2005-2013 has increased by 860% and reached the value of 4.8. In other developed countries, it ranges from 3.2 to 7.4; in Russia in 2008 - 2013 years this ratio increased from 0.8 to 1.0. Economy by restrictive transfusion strategy in 2013 was 47.2 mln rubles.
