The article raises the question: why does the modern history of philosophy pay relatively little attention to the Medieval period of the development of the subject 146 Христианское чтение № 1, 2019 (philosophical thinking)? After all, this period takes about two-thirds of the time interval which it considers. An answer is proposed, according to which Modern historians of philosophy attract philosophical worldview diversity. This diversity does not apply to the Middle Ages, in which Christian theology fulfilled the ideological function. Philosophy had an official character in relation to it. There is an opinion that such a distribution of roles between theology and philosophy is normal for human thinking. After all, faith can speak about the supramental, but the mind cannot do it. The usurpation by the philosophy of ideological function, gradually led to ideological pluralism. The last one creates in our time many problems for the unity of social life. It is suggested that medieval studies will again attract the attention of historians of philosophy. They should change the methodological perspective of their problems and abandon the number of described worldview systems as a criterion for the tension of philosophical life. Then an immense field of activity is opened before them, no less interesting than the previous one
