Rating commercial banks by level of reliability is an important stage in organizing a country’s financial and economic system protected from internal shocks. An open, generally accessible way of calculating ratings of commercial banks helps to improve the financial climate, as banks themselves are interested in increasing their position. In this case, customers will be able to make an informed decision regarding the risk taken in the event of opening an account with a bank. In connection with the aforementioned, there are increasing requirements for the quality of the rating methodology used, which should correspond to the current state of the financial sector and take into account the prevailing conditions, features and limitations of the activities of commercial banks at the federal and regional levels. The methodology should adequately assess the position of a separate (analyzed) bank against the background of its competitors. The article highlights the main factors affecting the reliability of commercial banks, such as: the degree of coverage of risky assets, profitability of lending and investment activities, the scale of activity and coverage of the credit market, the focus of the bank’s business model, and some others. A detailed analysis is made of the methodology for assessing and rating credit organizations that has become widespread in the banking community in terms of reliability V.S. Kromonov, including the correctness of the calculation of the integral reliability index. The model calculations carried out in the work made it possible to make generalizations regarding the adequacy of this and alternative methods to the state of the Russian banking system and suggest directions for their modernization on the basis of expanding the number of indicators used in reliability assessments and clarifying the composition of data from the annual reports of banks involved in their calculation.
