Today the intellectual property is one of the main factors of the information economy development, which necessitates the study of it as an economic category. The article describes some approaches to the intellectual capital study, identifies its main elements, and suggests an original definition. The author analyzes the approaches to the intellectual property as an economic category, discusses its features and specifies the essence.
