The article discusses the methodological approaches to the study of the social structure of modern Russian society. Observing the factors of stratification of modern Russian society, the author outlines the main types of methodological approaches to the analysis of class structures: “single-stage” and “multi-stage” analysis. As one of the versions of “single-stage” analysis a model of stratification based on the criterion of standard of living is presented. The author comes to conclusion that even now, Russian society remains a society of “shifted down” social positions, and deprivation of the basic needs in varying degrees, affects a significant portion of the population.
