Traditionally, in the John Fowles's novel The French Lieutenant's Woman there is an emphasis on many references to the works of the Victorian Age authors (J. Austin, Ch. Dickens, W. Thackeray, G. Eliot, Th. Hardy and others). Acknowledging the importance of the influence of Victorian texts on the poetics of this novel, the author of the article draws the readers' attention to the allusions to Antique and Christian mythology.
