The article is dedicated to the analysis of the phenomenon of mythological perception of the past. In recent decades, the desire to “rewrite history” has become a serious problem facing professional researchers who are often forced to refute willfully absurd constructs of contemporary “rebuilders” and mythmakers. It is demonstrated that the “truth” of mythmakers inevitably conflicts with the “truth” of historians, leading to socio-psychological collisions that distort views of real events and heroes of the past. The opinion is expressed that the phenomenon of mass consciousness includes depersonalization that consequently results in barbarization that begins when “in the old culture risen to the heights of clarity and purity of thought and cognition over the centuries, this cognition starts getting clouded by magic and fantasy stirred by the dirty fume wave of fierce instincts and passions”.
