Migration has played a prominent role in population formation over the millennia. The peculiarity of Kazakhstan is that migration influenced the size and ethnic composition of its population throughout the XX century. The most significant migration processes took place in the 1940-1950s. During this period, several types of migratory flows were sent to the Republic: forced, organized and spontaneous. Pre-war and wartime deportations, evacuations and re-evacuations, organized recruitment and the development of virgin and fallow lands have left a significant trace in the demographic history of Kazakhstan. All of these events, with the exception of the evacuation and re-evacuation, radically affected primarily the ethnic composition of the population and its size. The complexity of assessing the situation lies in the fact that no census was conducted in 1949. Consequently, the materials of the Central State Archive of the Republic of Kazakhstan were used for an objective analysis of these processes.
