The article examines the demographic and social characteristics of the population of Khabarovsk and Vladivostok. Attention is focused on the components that determine the changes in the population of cities - natural and migratory movements. It is characteristic that in comparing two large cities, similar features and some differences are noted. The outflow from the cities is directed to the Central, North-West Federal Districts. Both cities have had a positive migration in the last few years, but it was established earlier in Khabarovsk. It is emphasized that large cities are developing at the expense of the demographic potential of administratively subordinated territories. The interest in buying dacha parcels and in building country houses near major cities is reviving. The publication provides an analysis of the composition of the labor resources employed for the work, to which mainly citizens of near and far abroad belong. There was not only a segmentation of the labor market, but some ethnic elements of the urban economy appeared in the form of market rows, entertainment and leisure facilities, working on an ethnic basis. As a result, there were closed ethnic groups that affect the social structure of cities. In the development of cities there are tendencies: one - on the universalization of social processes, the other - on the autonomization of economic development for the approval of new forms of social organization of the city.
