The article deals with the main stages of the life of Metropolitan John (Wendland) with the aim of a deep study of his personality and heritage. The combination of scientific activity of Wendland with monastic life and clergy in the Soviet period is shown. Shows the period of work in the Soviet scientific institutions, work in geological expeditions. There is a great contribution to science based on his researches. Through the path of learning and secular knowledge, the formation takes place and the question of choosing the further service of the Church in the God-fearing society is raised. The period of training of Archimandrite John in the Leningrad Theological Academy, as well as the stages of writing the candidate dissertation, the comments of the supervisor and reviewer on the thesis of Archimandrite John.
