Metropolitan Palladius (Raev) of Saint Petersburg and Novgorod: the Vologda period of his Episcopal ministry (1869–1873)

Palladius (Pavel Pisarev- Raev), Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga, the First-rank member of the Holy Synod, is a prominent and bright figure in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church at the end of the 19th century. During the years of his service to the Church, Metropolitan Palladius headed such important places in the Church hierarchy as the Chair of Archbishop of Kartali and Kakheti, Exarch of Georgia and the Metropolitan Chair. Metropolitan Palladius headed the latter one until his death in 1898. The report presents an attempt to characterize the period before and during his ministry at the Vologda Department. Bishop’s administrative activity in the Vologda Diocese is considered; the analysis of the annual Episcopal visits is presented. The conclusion gives an idea about the perception of the Bishop among the Vologda parishioners and the reasons for preserving the long memory of him among the Vologda residents.
