This paper discusses the research findings of candidate variety study of perennial onions species in the south of West Siberia. The study involved 54 accessions of 18 perennial onion species. Early-growing (April 1-10), medium-growing (April 11-12) and late-growing candidate varieties (April 12-30) were identified. Promising genotypes were revealed according to onion ontogenetic stages. A long period of “growth - bolting” was found in the following candidate varieties: onion Altayskiy Nos. 60 and 61 (45-50 days); Welsh onion Nos. 15, 22, 25 (45-47 days); Siberian chives No. 51 (50 days). The morphological characteristics of the candidate varieties were given. On the basis of the overall indices, a promising candidate onion variety Altayskiy-61/98 was selected, successfully passed the State Variety Testing and released as Viktor variety.
