Purpose: to identify the features of management in the model of spatial development in Germany. Methods: analysis of the main strategic planning documents of German spatial and regional policy, historical analysis, regional comparative studies. Results: summarized the main features of the urban and rural policy of Germany, the development of metropolitan areas. The periodization of the main stages of model formation is proposed. It is determined that with the external diversity of various elements of spatial and regional policy, it has been shown that they work in a coordinated manner in the direction of finding mechanisms to improve the various effects of public policy. She pursue in different directions, in order to ensure a more balanced economic development within a single territory of the country, as opposed to development under exclusively influenced by market forces. Scientific novelty: it is emphasized that the importance of the spatial factor in the development of the country is substantiated as one of the key development factors that ensure a high level of its development and competitiveness while maintaining an appropriate standard of living and social cohesion. Practical significance: the study of the experience of German spatial policy is associated with the prospects for improving the modern spatial development management system in the Russian Federation and with the possibility of constructive use in Russian practice of the significant accumulated to date of similar experience.
