The article reviews «From the Abyss» («Seeking for the lost») motive as reduced presence of ancient religious genre «De profundis» in poetry of the Great Patriotic War period. The author traces the genesis of the term in biblical paradigm from Old Testament to New Testament conceptions. The article analyses forms of realization of this motive, its semantics and evolution in poetry of various worldview and aesthetics, for instance, by A. Akhmatova, A. Tvardovsky, P. Antokolsky, S. Orlov, etc. The author shows that ‘de profundis’ appears in different variations: from a motive to a plot-forming basis. The article demonstrates realization of ‘De profundis’ subject-motive complex as a variety of mortal discourse which is significant for poetry of war period. ‘De profundis’ motive research allows to correct and to deepen knowledge on anthropologic and axiological foundations of Russian poetry of war period.
