The article deals with the analysis of the colour red in the story Jael (Elementals) by a contemporary British writer A.S.Byatt. The connection of the motif with a Scripture story about Jael and Sisera, the theme of creativity and the image of a woman-artist is considered. Created through this motif, binary oppositions of the male-female, active-passive, real-unreal, interest-boredom, conformism-freedom and others are analysed. The parallel between the red and the motif of the threshold, passage, initiation is drawn.
