The article presents a comparative analysis of the literary works of N. M. Karamzin ("Island of Borngolm", "Sierra-Morena") and N. S. Gumilev ("Cain's Daughters", "Fateful Death", "Stradivarius's Violin", "Black Dick") in terms of identification of their common preromantic motive - the motive of secret. It is proved that Gumilev's literary apprenticeship (1905-1911), being in the mainstream of the Symbolist tradition, actually shows a tendency to use the global cultural images and plots, including the appeal to the Russian preromantic tradition, which are typical for the Russian Acmeist poets.
