The article is devoted to the motives that drove various public activities of the urban population of the Russian Far East in the second half of the XIXth - early XXth centuries. This topic is very important for reconstructing the process of civil society formation in the Russian Empire. The author focuses on the functioning of voluntary associations in the Far Eastern cities, showing highly mosaic picture of those motives that drove the local activists to perform public duties, donate money for charity, create amateur unions and participate in public events.
