The article is devoted to the problem of the nature of the "medieval" colour in Walter Scott's romances on Chivalry. W.Scott's interest in the Middle Ages was not determined by his love to "gothic" literature, but by his participation in the antiquarian movement and study of the ancient manuscripts in which he found the romances unknown to most of his contemporaries. He used рlotformative motifs and images from the medieval romances in his own works.

"gothic" invariant, romance, рlotformative motif, "medieval" colour
