Currently, there are no studies analyzing publications on Saint Petersburg museums that emerged during the era of Nicholas II. This article is the first attempt to fill this gap. The topic is relevant due to the fact that museums play a prominent role in the historical and cultural heritage of the country, and St. Petersburg historically was at the forefront of museum construction. The article presents a generic classification of museum publications coupled with their grouping, traces the publication activity, and indicates the practical importance of the works. The analysis of the published sources will make it possible to reconstruct the history of Saint Petersburg museums and determine the role and significance of the identified works in the study of museum history. Each presented publication made a certain contribution to the comprehension of museum activity, the study of museums, the development of museum work historiography, and the transfer of experience to other cities. The study used such general principles of history as objectivity, historicism and scientific approach implemented through chronological and comparative historical methods.
