Beginning of christianization of indigenous peoples of the Ob North

The research focuses on the process of Christianization of the indigenous peoples of the Ob North, which was one of the most important aspects of the colonial policy of the state in Siberia. Part of the Russian state "other nations" (or "foreigners"), had their own formed and established spiritual traditions, religious and ideological beliefs, customs, ritual system. Interest to the issue has appears as early as in the XVIII century. Later different researchers reported the individual details of the monasteries Tobolsk diocese, about the role of the Russian Orthodox Church and the activities of the Tobolsk bishops. The second half of XIX - early XX century are characterized by the increase of papers on certain aspects of the history of the Russian Orthodox Church. The publications of anti-religious content, which describes the immoral behavior of clergies and tyranny of the Church authorities, appeared in the first years of the Soviet regime. History relating to wooden and stone construction of the Tobolsk Bishop''s residence has also reflected in the writings of historians in 1990's and in 2000's. The research specifies the reasons necessary for Christianization of the indigenous population and considers its stages. Special attention is paid to the activities of metropolitan Philotheus Leschinsky.
