The research considers the significance of generating the national idea by the state which should be the basis for consolidation of different social groups of contemporary Russian society, primarily the youth. The paper analyzes the approaches to understanding the national idea in the branches of social and humanities knowledge (sociological, political, management ones). Studying the secondary sociological data, the author describes civic and value identification of Russian youth and substantiates his views in this regard. To identify the role of the national idea as a factor in the consolidation of young people in the modern context, it is relevant to determine the transformations of young subgroups’ values from the end of the 20th century to the present. The cohort studies into students’ social well-being conducted by Ural sociologists under the guidance of Yu.R. Vishnevsky and L.Ya. Rubina in the above-mentioned period are the secondary data for such analysis.
