The article focuses on the socio-political conflicts in the tax sphere in the ancient Roman province of Judea and the Byzantine Empire. The author believes that the main basis of the tax disputes in Judaea was excessive tax burden on the background of religious differences between the Roman administration and local Jewish population. In the Byzantine Empire, the abundance of taxes and tough measures applied in their collection had led to the fact that people evaded taxes or migrated to the territory of other countries.
