The article shows the potential of narrative and discourse analysis in the study of practices of reflection and formation of professional identity in the Soviet Union. The sample for the qualitative study was 50 volumes of five newspapers - 5 papers per year. The aim of the article is to summarize the Soviet experience in shaping the narrative and discourse of professional identity, which could be useful, as due to a unified ideological line pursued by media. The unity and uniformity of the information space was a condition to ensure the formation of a stable professional identity and that was possible only through totalitarian control over the media. The authors find out that in general, the entire narrative of professional activity in the Soviet press was imbued by discourse of heroism, courage and struggle. However, even in democratic societies, there is a possibility of positive influence on professional identity through the media.
