The article presents an assessment of the species composition and abundance of small mammals living in the northern part of the lake Chany, which is located in the central part of Baraba Lowland. It has been revealed that the natural vegetation cover of the territory is characteristic of forest-steppe and is the most attractive for rodents. We have studied the diversity of fauna and population of small mammals on four islands in the northern part of Lake Chany (Central Baraba), as well as in coastal areas. Among the six species recorded, the red-backed vole is the most numerous on the islands, and the field mouse is most numerous in coastal areas. The number of small mammals varies significantly on different islands and survey sites depending on the type of biotope. The highest abundance is typical for habitats with forest and shrub vegetation, both on the mainland and on the islands.
