Evidence-based strategies and economic arguments for a policy of suicide prevention

Increasing evidence of the high socio-economic costs of suicide and intentional self-harm contributes to the growing recognition of the need to promote positive mental health and well-being, as well as the correction and prevention of suicidal behaviour. The discussion of suicide and self-harm prevention includes certainly health economic evidence according to the principles of welfare economics along with cultural, social, and political aspects. The review of current literature and original data highlights the importance of evidence-based public and local programs for the prevention of suicide and intentional self-harm, as well as targeted interventions in high-risk groups of suicidal behavior. The overall assessment of the effectiveness of antisuicide interventions necessarily includes economic analysis, according to the concept of the welfare economy and with the involvement of methods of the health economy. Examples of fruitful and perspective approach are given. These measures can be not only humane, but also potentially economically viable. Additional research is needed to gain knowledge regarding the specific setting and / or target populations in which each biopsychosocial treatment intervention has most resource saving potential.
