The article is devoted to one of the periods in development of the Russian scientific school of the Mongolian Studies. The beginning of the XX th century was marked by the development of a new linguistic trend, which was represented by V. Kotvich, B. Vladimircov, A. Rudnev. At the same time the traditional Mongolian studies went on developing, especially the practical trend represented by A.M. Pozdneev who organized the work of the Oriental Practical Academy of the Imperial Oriental society. This trend was criticized by linguists.
