Tajikistan has a peripheral economy, according to the general criteria for such a designation. As in many peripheral economies, data from the country underestimate the standard of living that many Tajiks can enjoy because much of their economic activity is not recorded. Reasons for the unrecorded economic activity include attempts to evade taxation and other scrutiny, as is common in all countries, but regulatory structures and information-recording technology available in the country also contribute to the absence of records. The numerous activities and portions of activities that are not recorded in peripheral economies explain much of the success that entrepreneurs in these countries have had: the income often exists to support a market for their goods and services.
