The teachings of Elder Porphyrios, his sayings, sermons and teachings reflect the traditional features of the monastic-ascetic discourse about God and the Church, but at the same time contain original and bold conclusions. This gave rise to discussions regarding the personality and heritage of the elder. Consideration of his views is necessary for understanding the topical problems of contemporary Orthodox theology and the Orthodox tradition in general. The article shows that the approach of St. Porphyrios to Christianity can be described as optimistic. Christianity is interpreted by the saint primarily as union with Christ.
