The downward mobility of Russian meshchanstvo in the first half of the XIX century (the legal aspect)

The author analyzes legal possibilities for downward mobility of the major Russian urban social group of the XIX century - meshchanstvo. The article is based on the laws of the Russian Empire. The author defines possible groups of downward mobility and mechanisms which led to the lowering of the social status of this social group representatives.
