The review examines a book by Hans Farnlof Motivation litteraire. Du formalisme russe au constructivisme (Literary Motivation. From Russian formalisme to Constructivisme) devoted to the consideration of the participation of different types of literary motivations in narrative syntagmatics. It is noted that the monograph is written on the material of the works of French realist writers of the XIX century: O. de Balzac, G. Flaubert, G. de Maupassant, etc., and the views of Russian formalists V.B. Shklovsky, R. Jacobson, Yu.M. Tynyanov and B.V. Tomashevsky about motivations are taken as the fundamental ideas. The excellent technical equipment of the publication is indicated: the book contains not only a rich bibliography, but also 3 indexes: an index of the names of the cited literary works, an index of names, an index of notions, as well as a list of diagrams and tables. The most interesting thing in Farnlof’s book is his proposed understanding of diegetic motivation as both “everyday” (according to Shklovsky’s definition) and teleodiegetic. However, this concept is somewhat discredited by the use of the terms composition and metaliterary level related to it: both of them are used by the author either frankly incorrectly or extremely indistinctly. According to the reviewer, these shortcomings are explained by the fact that Farnlof does not use the basic concept of narratological analysis, the concept of narrative levels created by G. Genette (and corrected by V.I. Tyupa, which, unfortunately, Farnlof cannot know). In addition, the review reproaches the author of the monograph for the lack of the concept of nondiegetic motivations in it.
