The analysis of the last 10-15 years trend of the need for obtaining a degree by managers of various levels is carried out. The problems of obtaining an academic degree and staffing in Russia are revealed. The article examines the American experience in this area. The need of the industry to hire candidates and doctors of sciences to strengthen competitiveness is substantiated.
