In the article, the interdisciplinary discussion about the nature of contemporary Russian ethnicity is considered. Based on the results of all-Russian national sociological research (monitoring of IS RAS, wave 2, 2015) the main value characteristics of modern Russians were revealed. The most popular ones were the qualities that reflect the shortage of positive civil interpersonal cooperation (such qualities as mutual respect, mutual support, and honesty). Drawing on the scarcity hypothesis of R. Inglehart the author makes a conclusion that the identity of the modern Russians reflects the experience of painful social transformations, of the deformation of social capital and traditional cultural foundations of interpersonal solidarity.
