Concerning the sensual and rational knowledge of law in the context of the genesis of the utilitarianism theory

This article reveals the issue on knowledge of law with the help of senses and rational thinking in the context of the genesis of the utilitarianism theory. The paper defines contribution of sensationalism and rationalism to the theory of utilitarianism, identifies the methodological role of each direction in the implementation of theoretical and empirical knowledge of law. Besides, the article evaluates the methodology used by the theory of utilitarianism, and argues its similarity to the methodology of natural law. In conclusion, the author analyzes a modern view on the methodology of classical utilitarianism, including using the approach of economic analysis of law.
