Based on published and archival materials from the libraries of American universities, the author of the article characterizes the activities of the famous emigre historian, theologian and public figure A. V. Kartashev. He shows the main contribution of the professor to the preservation of the St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute in Paris during the Second World War and the creation of conditions for its revival in the post-war period. The article emphasizes that the main merit of A. V. Kartashev was the training of representatives of a new generation of teachers of the institute. In characterizing the scholarly contribution to Old Testament biblical studies, particular attention is paid to identifying new latent principles of argumentation in the field of isagogics - coherence and conventionality, which should ensure the modernization of the study of the Old Testament while maintaining continuity with the best traditions of Russian pre-revolutionary theology.
