The historical, population-genetic and zootechnical aspects of formation and genes pool features of the oldest of domestic breeds of cattle are considered. The Kholmogory breed is characterized by the highest duration of economic use and lifelong dairy productivity in Russia. The population-genetic and zootechnological data suggest about selective value of a genofond of breed. The crossing with Holstein-Friesian cattle leads to the loss of its genetic specificity. The conclusions are drawn about necessity of effective protection and preservation of the Kholmogory breed.
