The paper describes an approach to identifying the regions where stone material found in Phanagoria constructions originated. The combination of methods used to describe the form and a number of analyses of the elemental composition of some rock types help researchers not only to determine formation conditions and conditions in which they were selected for construction but also identify the origin of the rocks. The application of this approach enabled us to identify the areas in the Mediterranean, Aegean and Black seas coastlines where some rock types originated.
