Attempts to strengthen the position of orthodoxy in Privislinsky region in the late XIX century

The article refers to the relationships between the Orthodox and the Catholic Churches in Privislinsky region at the end of the XIX century. The issue of the country’s provinces integration within the Russian Empire has always drawn the interest of researchers. This particular article reveals how the Russian government used religion as a means for integration that is a topical issue on the XIX century policies. The subject of research is the confessional aspect of the reforming procedure in Privislinsky region. The aim of the current work is to reveal how effective the efforts of the Russian administrators used to be and whether they provided the basis for national consolidation or not. Such research would contribute to creating a more precise picture of Russian-Polish relations at the end of the XIX century in terms of confessional practices. The article focuses on issues of the Greek Catholic Church within the territory of Privislinsky region, the developments made by the Orthodox administration and the issue of rival, between the Orthodox and the Catholic entities. The author concludes how effective the confessional policies in Polish lands were during the reign of Alexander III. The key conclusion made is the following: the reforms in the country’s provinces conceived at the end of the XIX century were undertaken in spite of the insufficient financing and the unprofessionalism of lower officials.
