Based on statistical data, the author shows the negative demographic trends typical of the Russian Far East in the post-Soviet period (since the early 1990s). The main reasons for the depopulation in the Far East region are identified: the social and economic crisis and the state’s rejection of protectionist policy towards the region. At the same time, a brief historiographical review of the research topic is provided. Then the social protection measures taken by the state in the 1990s are characterized as insufficient to overcome the demographic crisis that has arisen in the Far East. The study analyzes the main state economic and demographic policies towards the Far East region in the 2000s and 2010s and sums up the interim results of the implementation of the main conceptual and policy documents in this regard. The author concludes that it is necessary to combine the economic and social measures that are designed to ensure the preservation and development of the demographic potential of the Russian Far East.
