The present article demonstrates the importance of knowledge in geriatric pharmacy for a pharmacist. Ninety percent of the surveyed students working in pharmacies admitted that pharmaceutical counseling of patients over 60 years of age is quite specific. Almost 80% of them believe that knowledge in geriatric pharmacy would be very useful for a pharmacist, although this it is not a mandatory discipline in the alumna programs. According to our respondents, elderly people usually base their choice on the price (preferring cheaper medications), advices, and advertising; most frequently, they buy cardiovascular drugs and prefer tablets. More than 80% of respondents answered that there is a need for educational programs for elderly people visiting pharmacies. Students involved in research activity in geriatric pharmacology were better prepared for pharmaceutical counseling of elderly people. Pharmaceutical assistance and educational work of a pharmacist can increase life expectancy and promote the implementation of the Federal project ‘Older Generation.’
